Empire vs. High Elves

Overview

Location: Winterfell
Date played: 9. joulukuuta 2014

Ruleset: Warhammer Rulebook 8th, official faq 1.9 , Warhammer: High Elves 8th , Warhammer: Dwarfs 8th.

No end of times.

House rules: Hidden lists (visible items and upgrades must be declared)

We decided to have Battleline. No roll for scenario. Terrain was randomized as BRB 8th page 142. My opponent won the table choice (and chose the other side what I originally were. He also won terrain placement but at that moment he realized that he had illegal list (he was supposed to tweak it before he came here. I said fix the list and could I do first terrain piece?)

- Warmachines

- Warmachines

- Outriders

- Archers

- Characters - my opponent got Iceshard blizzard, Uranos thunderbolt and Comet

- Characters - Eltharion got Miasma and pendulum. Teclis has Flaming Sword, Curse of Anhareir, Blades of Aiban, Pha's Protection, Flesh to Stone, Harmonic Convergence, Okkams Mindrazor, Soulblight.

- Scouts

I used my Vanguards to stay in place, and didn't want to advance any further to give hellblasters rough time. His outriders explored River of Light

My opponent won the first turn

Turn 1 - Empire

Steamtank missfired and got 2 wounds and steampoints total 6 sp. I realized while making this report that Warmachines cannot move from buildings. He decided to venture inside the forest with the captain to gain extra cover. he received one wound from dangerous terrain.

Magic 1+1 no channels.

- Iceshard blizzard (archers) 2 PD, scroll of hoeth -> Failed to forgot the spell

At shooting outriders managed to panic reavers off the board and other unit killed bunch of lions. Steam tank shot bolt thrower but rolled 1 to wound.

Turn analyze:

- Using scroll at this moment might have being little hasty, but I felt that Iceshard was the worst spell he had. As my archers had banner of world dragon they really didn't fear damage spells. also depending how my opponent would used comet it might have being worse for him than to me.

Turn 1 - High Elves

Sinister statue killed one empire knight.

Magic 4+5 both channeled (10 vs 6)

- Flaming Sword of Rhuin (Archers) 2 PD -> failed dispel on 3 DD

- Blades of Aiban (Archers) 2 PD

- Harmonic Convergence (Archers) 2 PD

- Curse of Anhareir (Inner Circle Knights) 2 PD -> Failed to dispel 3 DD without modifier)

- Pha's Protection 1 PD, natural failure

- Miasma (Empire knights right) 1 PD, succesfull decreased movement by 2.

Shooting. Reavers managed to kill on outrider. I used single shots from bolt throwers to kill both captains. With my Flaming Sword / Blades of Aiban, Harmonic Convergence archers I though that shooting the outriders would be overkill. I decided to shoot steam tank doing 3 wounds to it. On retrospective some other target might have being better choice.

Turn 2 - Empire

Empire knights received couple wounds from sinister statue. Steam tank missfired again and received 1 wound and 1 extra steam point. Steam tank got Bironas Timewarp. Demigryphs swift reformed. Innercircle knights got heavy losses from curse of anhareir, river casted Light of Battle to them. The BSB / Wizard knight unit got bironas timewarp and lost couple more to dangerous terrain. The other empire knight unit got 3 wounds from river and paniced away.

Magic: 4+6 both channeled (11 vs 7)

- Upgraded comet 6 PD. Irrestible force. Miscast result did 1 wound on mage and he lost all the dices.

Shooting: Hellblaster blasted reavers and anhilated them completely. Steam tank shot steam on archer unit and killed something like 9 archers. out riders near the river killed 6. I failed my first panic test but passed reroll. Other hell blaster killed sisters of avelorn unit.

Turn 2 - High Elves

No damage from sinister statue.

Comet gathered more strengh. Magic 4+2 +1 DD (6 vs. 5) I used staff of lileath to add one power dice to each cast

- Flaming sword (archers) 1 PD (+1PD) result 15.

- Blades of Aiban (archers) 1 PD (+1PD) Dispelled on 3 DD

- Harmonic Convergence (archers) 1 PD (+1PD)

- Pha's Protection (Archers) 1 PD(+1PD) failed to dispel

- Curse of Anhareir (Inner circle knights) 1 PD (+1PD)

- Flesh to stone (archers) 1 PD (+1PD)

At shooting my right flank bolt throwers / reavers destroyed empire knight unit + mage. Innercircle knights paniced off and due curse of anhareir they were reduced to 2 models and lord. (warriors priest died since he got wound from curse of anhareir the last turn). I still wanted to give that steam tank some arrow love and shot my archer unit to it. I did something like 10 wounds but he saved them all. At this moment I realized that if I shoot demigryphs with my bolt throwers and one of them died my redirection would have gone to waste. thus I shot outriders with multiple bolts and killed only one. On retrospective shadowarriors could have being more wider.

Turn 3 - Empire

Comet still delayed. No other magic. Steam tank drew little power and didn't missfire. Empire Knights rallied as inner circle continued their running. My opponent trusted that outriders could have finished three white lions and moved his hellblasters.

Shooting lions were too tough to be removed and single white lion survived 8 short ranged outrider shots.

At close combat demigryphs finished puny shadow warriors. Staem tank oblirated great eagle. Ellyrian reavers failed to wound bsb, he killed one but my trusted elven steed killed the BSB and allowed me to reform.

Turn 3 - High Elves

My reavers charged to hellblaster. There was no way finishing the charge without touching the river (retrospective little better angle on last turn reform would have being better) River shot shems burning gaze on reavers killing 3 of them. This picture was little off. White lion reached the combat on its own movement so no stand and shooting for riders.

Comet crashed down and killed both throwers. Magic 4+4 no channels

- Flaming sword of rhuin on archers 2 PD

- Blades of aiban (white lions) 2 PD - Dispelled

- Harmonic convergence bubble 3 PD

- Miasma (outriders) 1 PD decreased their weapon skill by 2.

At shooting my archers killed outrider unit. Boltthrowers killed 1 demigryph.

At close combat my lions did 2 wounds on tank reducing it to 3 wounds. Ellyrian reaver didn't do any wounds but won the combat due charge and destroyed the volley gun. too bad master engineer paniced away too far away ( I aimed reaver redirection right in to the engineer) Single lion didn't kill nor die with the battle. outriders holded.

Turn 4 - Empire

Master engineer rallied. Inner Circles ran off board. Steam tank grinded 6 lions.

At shooting his hellblaster shot my archers (oh bloodiest hell I could have backed up couple inch to get out its range...) killing 10 of them.

Demigryphs destroyed bolt thrower and paniced the other. White lion killed one outrider and survived due heavy armor save! Steamtanks breath weapon killed rest of the lions.

Turn 4 - High Elves

Swift reformed and backed up with archers.

Magic 4+1 no channels

- Flaming sword (archers) 2 PD, dispelled

- Harmonic convergence (archers) 1 PD, succesfull

- Flesh to stone (archers) 1 PD, succesfull

- Miasma (outriders) 1 pd, decreased weaponskill by 1.

On shooting my archer killed hellblaster. Bolt thrower rallied.

White lion didn't cause wounds and again survived with 5+ armor save. Reaver died in the battle with engineer.

Turn 5 - Empire

Steam tank rolled exactly 2, so no missfire. I don't remember what spell did river cast on empire knights.

No magic.

Eltharion and Teclis finished steam tank off. It still killed 6 archers with impact hits (flesh to stone didn't help)

White lion didn't cause any wounds neither did outriders.

Turn 5 - High Elves

Magic 6+1 +1 PD

- Flaming sword (archers) 2 PD, dispelled

- Miasma (outriders) 1 PD, dispelled

- Blades of Aiban (archers) 2 PD natural failure

- Pendulum towards demigryphs 3 PD. It reached them but passed initiative test.

Once again white lion failed to cause any wounds and survived! real grudge fight.

Turn 6 - Empire

Demigryphs tried to get off archers range.

At close combat.... too familiar scene. No wounds... that had to be perhaps the most longest and hardest battle ever fought.

Turn 6 - High Elves

Magic 1+1 no channels

- Miasma (outriders) 1 PD -1 ws.

- Harmonic convergence (Lions) 1 PD, natural failure.

I shot the master engineer in the house with archer block.

Again Lion didn't wound nor did outriders. This means that lion survived total 42 outrider pistol shots and 28 (two models most of the time) close combat attacks (which sometimes hitted on 5+ due miasma and sometimes on 4+) That Lion also killed only 1 outrider during the 7 rounds of combat needing 3+ to hit and 2+ to wound. Perhaps he just went totally defensive stance. That lion shall be known as Leo "The Untouchable".

Final score was 2295 - 883. Fun game where terrain was really my best ally.
